Hawaii Joins States Banning Crypto ATMs Amid Rising Scam Concerns

Share

Hawaii has become the latest US state to ban cryptocurrency kiosks and ATMs after Governor Josh Green signed legislation into law in July. The bill, which passed in May, prohibits 'the ownership, operation, or management of a digital financial asset transaction kiosk that accepts United States currency from a customer in exchange for a digital financial asset.'

The move follows data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center, which reported $11 billion in losses related to digital assets in 2025. Hawaii residents lost an estimated $80 million.

Other states have implemented similar bans, including Minnesota, Tennessee, and Indiana. However, some US states, like South Dakota and Wyoming, have passed laws with stricter regulations on crypto ATM activities.
