Hawaii Joins States Banning Crypto ATMs Amid Rising Scam Losses
Hawaii is set to become the latest US state to ban cryptocurrency kiosks and ATMs after its governor signed off on legislation. The ban, which takes effect on October 1, follows a similar move by states like Minnesota, Tennessee, and Indiana, who began enforcing their own bans in August, July, and March respectively.
The law was passed in response to data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center, which reported that Americans lost over $11 billion from scams related to digital assets in 2025. Specifically, the bureau noted that Hawaii residents lost around $80 million in 2025, with 826 complaints related to crypto.
According to CoinATMRadar, there are currently 57 crypto ATMs and kiosks operating across four of Hawaii's main islands, which will be affected by the ban. The legislation aims to protect consumers from scams associated with digital asset transactions.
