Hedera CPO Unveils Framework for Trustworthy AI Payments
Hedera's Chief Policy Officer, Nilmini Rubin, has emphasized the importance of trust and accountability in AI-driven payments. Rubin argued that financial institutions require evidence of authorization and clear operating limits to ensure accountability, even when software agents execute transactions independently.
She proposed cryptographic identity standards to link agents to the people or institutions behind them, ensuring that agents are authorized to act on behalf of their principals. Rubin also emphasized the need for verifiable audit trails, which can be achieved through technologies like Verifiable Compute, a system that generates cryptographic certificates for AI operations.
Rubin identified predictable fees and deterministic finality as operational requirements for systems processing autonomous payments. She argued that agents need fixed, predictable fees, as percentage-based pricing can complicate high-volume payments. Deterministic finality, which establishes transaction completion without probabilistic confirmation, is also essential to ensure the integrity of transactions.
Hedera's architecture, incorporating Verifiable Compute and other technologies, aims to create tamper-resistant records of agent actions and support verification and governance of agents initiating transactions.
