Hester Peirce Leaves SEC Amid Ongoing Crypto Rulemaking
SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce is leaving her position on October 2. She has been a prominent voice in US crypto policy since joining the agency in 2018, and her departure comes as the SEC advances formal crypto rulemaking.
Peirce's tenure at the SEC was marked by her advocacy for clearer token frameworks and safe-harbor concepts. She repeatedly called for more workable rules rather than enforcement-led regulation, earning her the nickname 'Crypto Mom'. However, she emphasized that putting a financial product on a blockchain does not remove it from securities law.
The SEC's current rulemaking push includes proposals for crypto custody, token classification, and market structure. Peirce helped shape these debates, but the policies themselves will continue through their normal rulemaking process with her departure.
