Hester Peirce Set to Exit SEC Amid Shift in Crypto Regulatory Landscape
Hester Peirce, the US Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) Crypto-Friendly Commissioner, will leave her position effective October 2. She has been a member of the commission since January 2018.
Peirce, nicknamed 'Crypto Mom' by industry supporters, spent years urging the SEC to write clear rules for digital assets, even when faced with opposition from Republican and Democratic Chairmen alike. Under President Donald Trump's administration, she was named to lead the SEC's Crypto Task Force and helped build a framework classifying different types of crypto assets.
One of Peirce's most notable achievements was the Innovation Exemption, which allowed for a five-year testing period for issuing and trading tokenized securities before regulators settled on permanent rules. Her resignation leaves the SEC with only two sitting commissioners, Chairman Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda, as the White House has yet to nominate a Democratic commissioner to fill an open seat.
