Hester Peirce Steps Down as Crypto Commissioner Amid Shifting SEC Posture
SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce is stepping down from her position on October 2, after an approximately eight-year tenure at the agency. She has served as a key figure in shaping the SEC's approach to digital assets, earning her the nickname 'Crypto Mom' for her efforts.
Pierce's resignation comes during a period of transition around her official term, which had already reached its scheduled end in June 2025. However, she can continue serving until about 18 months after her term expires if not replaced earlier.
The SEC's crypto posture has shifted since Donald Trump took office in January 2025, with reduced enforcement activity in some crypto matters. Pierce is expected to move into academia, joining Regent University's law school as an associate professor in November.
