Hester Peirce to Step Down as SEC Commissioner on October 2
SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce is stepping down from her position on October 2, after an approximately eight-year tenure at the agency. In a post to her X account, Peirce stated that she was grateful for the 'honor of her professional lifetime' serving as commissioner.
Peirce's departure comes at a time when the SEC's crypto strategy has been shifting under new leadership. Since January 2025, the agency has reduced enforcement activity in some crypto matters, and Chairman Paul Atkins has emphasized a shift away from 'regulation by enforcement' towards clearer guidance.
As director of the SEC's Crypto Task Force since February 4, 2025, Peirce played a key role in shaping the agency's approach to digital assets. Her departure may impact the pace at which the SEC changes its composition and priorities for crypto-related oversight.
