Hive Challenges Swedish Tax Authority Over Cryptocurrency Mining Classification

Share

Hive Digital Technologies is challenging Sweden's tax authority over its decision to classify two of its subsidiaries as cryptocurrency miners, rather than taxable computing services providers.

The dispute centers on the VAT treatment of Hive's Swedish companies, Bikupa Datacenter AB and Bikupa Datacenter 2 AB. According to Swedish authorities, these companies mined cryptocurrency on their own behalf, which would mean they are not eligible for VAT recovery on major operating expenses such as hardware and electricity.

Hive argues that its subsidiaries supplied computing power to identified customers under contracts, similar to conventional data center hosting services. The company claims this distinction has a substantial financial impact on data center operators, who may have to repay VAT refunds granted by authorities in the past.
