Hive Escalates Swedish VAT Dispute with European Commission
Bitcoin miner Hive has escalated its dispute with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to the European Commission. The miner is challenging a VAT assessment that it claims was incorrectly calculated and resulted in an excessive tax liability of SEK 1 billion (approximately $105 million USD).
Hive's dispute began last year when the Swedish Tax Agency assessed the miner for Value Added Tax (VAT) on its electricity costs, which were deemed to be subject to VAT. Hive argued that as a cryptocurrency mining operation, it is exempt from paying VAT on its energy expenses.
The European Commission has confirmed receipt of the complaint and will now review the matter. If successful, this could have significant implications for the global cryptocurrency industry, potentially leading to changes in tax policies and regulations across the EU.
