Billionaire venture capitalist Reid Hoffman has injected $8 million into the Democratic Party of Wisconsin over the past five weeks, aiming to bolster gubernatorial nominee David Crowley in his tight race against Republican Tom Tiffany. The LinkedIn co-founder's contributions, totaling $2 million on Sept. 24, $1 million on Oct. 2, and $5 million in two installments on Oct. 5 and Oct. 20, reflect a broader late-stage spending surge by wealthy donors ahead of Election Day.

Hoffman's spending is part of a larger trend, with other high-profile donors also making significant contributions. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg donated $750,000 to Democratic Texas gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa, while Y Combinator co-founder Jessica Livingston added $150,000. Meanwhile, PayPal co-founder Luke Nosek gave $500,000 to the Judicial Fairness PAC, which supports conservative judicial candidates in Texas. Elon Musk, the cycle's biggest individual donor with roughly $475 million in disclosed political giving, has already contributed $2 million to the same group.

The surge in donations coincides with a record-breaking political ad spending frenzy, with over $1 billion booked to air before Election Day. The 2026 cycle has already surpassed previous presidential election cycles in political ad spending, totaling more than $11.2 billion. Hoffman has framed his spending as a necessary response to authoritarian influences, stating on X, 'We should get money out of politics. And while others spend outrageous amounts to keep authoritarian clowns in power, those of us who believe in the ideals of America cannot yield.'

Hoffman's contributions have funded a series of ads targeting Republicans over their ties to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The House Majority PAC, which has received $8.5 million from Hoffman this cycle, has spent $8.4 million on Epstein-focused ads, totaling nearly 719.4 million impressions. These ads have pushed Epstein into at least six battleground House races, accusing Republicans of obstructing the release of Epstein-related records. However, Hoffman's past association with Epstein has drawn criticism, with Republicans accusing Democrats of hypocrisy for accepting his money while using Epstein against GOP candidates.
