Hong Kong Banker Jailed 4 Years Over $1.6B Credit Fraud Using Cryptocurrency
A former Hong Kong bank official has been sentenced to four years in prison for falsely authenticating letters of credit worth over $1.6 billion and receiving more than $470,000 in cryptocurrency bribes.
Lam Chun-yin, a 32-year-old former customer relationship manager at China Construction Bank (Asia), had pleaded guilty in Hong Kong's District Court to the charges related to the massive fraud scheme.
The case centered on fraudulent letters of credit that Lam authenticated despite lacking authority to handle the transactions. These documents are commonly used as payment guarantees in commercial and financial transactions, making it critical for counterparties to assess their exposure based on the authenticity of the issuing bank's commitment.
Judge Ernest Lin Kam-hung emphasized the seriousness of Lam's conduct and its effect beyond the immediate parties involved, stating that banking and insurance are central to Hong Kong's economy and that conduct capable of undermining confidence in these industries can also damage the city's standing as an international financial center.
