Hong Kong Official Sentenced to Four Years for $1.6B Credit Fraud

Lam Chun-yin, a former bank official in Hong Kong, has been sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to make restitution of more than $470,000 after he was found guilty of falsifying letters of credit for over $1.6 billion.

Lam, who worked as a customer relationship manager at China Construction Bank (Asia), pleaded guilty to the charges earlier. He received cryptocurrency bribes in exchange for his services.

The judge noted that deterrent sentences are necessary even for first-time offenders, given the severity of the crime and its impact on society.
