Hong Kong Pilots Tokenized Debt Instruments and Regulated Stablecoin Trading
Hong Kong is taking steps to become a leading digital asset hub in Asia. The government has announced plans to pilot the tokenization of Exchange Fund Bills by the end of 2026 and allow regulated stablecoins to trade on licensed platforms.
The move marks a significant step for the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's market infrastructure, with CMU Omniclear establishing a digital asset platform within the year. This platform will provide one-stop services including digital bond issuance and settlement.
Hong Kong has spent years assembling a regulated framework for digital assets, licensing virtual asset trading platforms and stablecoin issuers. Allowing regulated stablecoins to trade on licensed platforms is the next phase of this rollout.
