Hoskinson Accuses Ethereum of Copying Cardano's EUTXO Architecture

Ethereum's proposed native UTXO model has reignited an old feud between Cardano and Ethereum developers, according to Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson.

Hoskinson accused Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstätter of copying Cardano's Extended Unspent Transaction Output (EUTXO) architecture without credit in a recent proposal for native UTXOs that could reduce permanent state use by 99.8%.

The proposed model builds on Ethereum's upcoming Frame Transactions standard, EIP-8141, and aligns with co-founder Vitalik Buterin's Lean Ethereum roadmap to simplify the network's architecture and slow state growth.

Hoskinson argued that deterministic transaction behavior is one of Cardano's strongest competitive advantages, and that competitors may copy individual technical ideas but cannot easily replicate Cardano's research-first culture.
