Hoskinson: Crypto Will Disrupt AI in Next 5-10 Years
Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, believes that cryptocurrency will disrupt artificial intelligence (AI) in the same way it disrupted cryptography. He thinks this will happen because blockchains can provide AI with payment rails, data ownership, provenance, and distributed computing.
Hoskinson argues that spending 10 times more on data centers every year is unsustainable due to electricity constraints and financial pressure on companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Pre-training is a significant expense for these companies, which may not be profitable at scale.
He compared AI's current state to cryptography in the past, when cryptographers initially rejected being associated with cryptocurrency. However, as cryptocurrency became more financially viable, it was able to attract top talent from the cryptographic community.
