House Advances Crypto Tax Bill Amid Senate Stalemate
The US House of Representatives has made progress on its crypto tax bill, known as the Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act. The Ways and Means Committee approved the proposal by a vote of 38-5, marking a significant step towards clarifying federal tax rules for digital assets.
The bill aims to simplify existing requirements and remove gain or loss calculations for qualifying network and transaction fees of $10 or less. This exemption would begin in 2028, but it's worth noting that ordinary crypto purchases would not be covered.
The legislation also establishes simpler accounting treatment for qualifying dollar-pegged stablecoin transactions and maintains wash-sale and constructive-sale provisions for digital assets.
Bitcoin prices have been volatile recently, falling below $75,000 after the Senate's CLARITY Act vote failed to reach cloture. However, the House tax vote has created a separate legislative path for digital assets.
