House Committee Advances First-Ever Crypto Tax Bill with Bipartisan Support
The House Ways and Means Committee has advanced the first-ever crypto tax bill, known as the Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act (H.R. 10357). The bill aims to provide clear guidelines for crypto owners and treat digital assets like other financial assets.
Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.), chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, said in an opening statement that the bill would modernize the taxation of digital assets and provide certainty for a growing digital asset economy.
The bill passed on a 38 to 5 vote, with five Democrats opposing it. The bill's provisions include creating tax exemptions for fees paid along with the disposition of digital assets, establishing rules to make it easier for people to use cryptocurrency and stablecoins for consumer transactions, and treating mining and staking rewards as ordinary income rather than capital gains.
