House Committee Advances Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Bill
The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill, which aims to lock up the government's existing Bitcoin for 20 years without buying any new coins, has passed a House committee vote with a 28-21 party-line margin.
This development comes after President Donald Trump created the reserve with an executive order in March 2025, but it remains a temporary measure that could be canceled by the next president. Congress is now trying to write the reserve into actual law through the American Reserve Modernization Act (ARMA).
The bill does not authorize the government to buy any Bitcoin and instead focuses on tracking the existing stash of around 328,000 BTC in U.S. government wallets.
While the move may seem significant, it's worth noting that the government's stash is only about 1.6% of Bitcoin's total market cap, which stands at around $1.68 trillion.
