House Committee Approves Bill to Make US 'Crypto Capital of World'
The US is one step closer to becoming the 'crypto capital of the world' after the House Ways and Means Committee approved a digital-asset tax legislation. The bill, called the Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act, aims to modernize the tax code by establishing clear rules for taxing digital assets like Bitcoin. Chairman Rep. Jason Smith said that this legislation will provide certainty surrounding the tax treatment of digital assets, allowing American consumers and investors to invest with confidence.
The committee passed the bill in a 38-5 bipartisan vote last week, which will move it on for the full House vote. The Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act removes the requirement that taxpayers must file a separate report for each digital asset transaction, streamlining reporting requirements and clarifying tax treatment of mining and staking.
President Donald Trump had previously vowed to make the US the 'undisputed Bitcoin superpower and crypto capital of the world,' adding that he would end former President Joe Biden's 'regulatory war on crypto and Bitcoin.' This legislation is a key step towards achieving this goal, as it treats digital assets as comparable traditional financial assets, allowing them to be eligible for existing tax code safe harbors.
