House Panel Advances Bill to Codify US Bitcoin Reserve with 20-Year Hold
A House committee has advanced legislation that would codify the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and impose a 20-year holding period on qualifying federal BTC. The House Financial Services Committee approved H.R. 8957 by a 28-21 vote, sending the amended measure forward for further consideration.
The bill builds on an existing executive order from Trump's administration, which established the reserve in May. The new legislation would prohibit sales of qualifying federal bitcoin for 20 years, treating it as a long-term reserve asset rather than inventory scheduled for routine disposal.
Currently, onchain data attributes approximately 324,527 BTC to US government-linked addresses, valued at about $26.48 billion at the displayed market price. After the holding period, Treasury could recommend selling up to 10% of reserve assets during any two-year period.
