How Solana's Unique Accounts Model Drives Blockchain Efficiency
Solana's accounts model is a unique feature that sets it apart from other blockchain platforms. In Solana, almost everything is an account, including wallets, smart contracts, token balances, and NFT metadata.
Each account has its own address, which is just a public key, 32 bytes long. A human or program can control this key, depending on the account type.
The fields that define every account include the public key (address), lamports (the balance measured in SOL's smallest unit), owner (the program ID with permission to change data), data (a byte array storing whatever needs to be held), executable (a flag showing if the account holds runnable code), and rent epoch.
The ownership rule is central to Solana, where only the owner can change an account's data or deduct its lamports. This prevents unauthorized access and keeps the network safe without extra checks everywhere.
