HSBC Launches Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin RedCoin by 2026
HSBC has unveiled HSBC RedCoin, a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the Hong Kong dollar. The bank plans to launch the digital asset through its existing apps, PayMe and the HSBC HK Mobile App, by the end of 2026. RedCoin holds license number FRS02 from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and is backed by liquid assets.
The initial rollout will focus on consumer payments, allowing users to make P2P transfers and P2M shopping payments without needing crypto accounts or exchange setups. Institutional and corporate services will follow in later phases, expanding RedCoin's use in banking, wholesale trade settlements, and Hong Kong's digital asset ecosystem.
A customer survey conducted by HSBC in June 2026 revealed that 74% of respondents knew at least one use case for stablecoins. Top use cases included digital investments (57%), P2P transfers (53%), and cross-border remittances (52%). The survey also highlighted the need for clear regulations, public education, anti-scam protection, and easy fiat redemption to build user trust.
HSBC plans to launch educational campaigns to address knowledge gaps before the RedCoin release. The stablecoin will compete with HKDAP, issued by Anchorpoint Financial, which focuses on cross-border corporate trade through Ethereum. HSBC's strategy, however, is aimed at retail adoption within its ecosystem.
