HSBC Prepares to Launch Stablecoin RedCoin for Broader Circulation

Share

HSBC is preparing to launch RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin designed for broader circulation. Initially, it will support person-to-person and merchant payments through PayMe and the HSBC Hong Kong Mobile App. This move comes as the bank already has an existing tokenized-deposit infrastructure supporting USD, HKD, GBP, EUR, and SGD.

The difference between RedCoin and Tokenised Deposits lies in their purpose: one is built for broader circulation, while the other is designed for institutional treasury activity. According to HSBC's research, 74% of respondents identified at least one potential stablecoin use case, with P2P payments being the second most popular after digital-asset trading.

The bank is targeting retail customers through established entry points like PayMe, which has over 3.3 million users. This approach avoids the need for users to learn how to use an exchange or standalone crypto wallet before interacting with the asset.
