HSBC Unveils Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin RedCoin for 2026
HSBC, a $3.2 trillion banking giant, is planning to launch a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin called RedCoin in the second half of 2026. The stablecoin will maintain a 1:1 peg with the Hong Kong dollar and be backed by high-quality liquid assets. Initially, RedCoin will be made available through PayMe and the HSBC Hong Kong app, supporting peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments.
HSBC plans to expand the use of RedCoin beyond retail payments into corporate and institutional applications. This will include corporate treasury operations, wholesale payments, and settlement involving tokenized assets. The bank's existing distribution network and access to customers through established banking channels are seen as advantages in the market.
The planned launch of RedCoin puts HSBC into competition with existing Hong Kong dollar stablecoin initiatives, such as Anchorpoint's HKDAP, which is already live in the licensed markets.
