HSBC Unveils RedCoin, Hong Kong Dollar-Pegged Stablecoin for Retail Adoption
HSBC has released its Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin, RedCoin, which will be available through the bank's PayMe app and HK Mobile App. The stablecoin will be backed 1:1 by the Hong Kong dollar and has obtained a license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA).
According to HSBC, the stablecoin will be released in two phases. The first phase will focus on consumer payments through PayMe, allowing users to make peer-to-peer transfers and shop using RedCoin. The second phase will bring RedCoin to institutional and corporate services, including banking and wholesale trade settlements.
HSBC conducted a survey of over 1,060 Hong Kong banking customers in June 2026, which found that 74% of respondents were aware of at least one use case for stablecoins. However, the survey also revealed that many customers were unclear about the nature of stablecoins, with 26% assuming they were issued by the government and 10% believing they paid interest.
HSBC plans to address knowledge gaps through educational campaigns on mobile apps, branches, and social media platforms before releasing the stablecoin. RedCoin will compete with HKDAP, a stablecoin issued by Anchorpoint Financial, a consortium including Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong), HKT, and Animoca Brands.
