HTX Wallet Transfers Spark Compliance Concerns

Small USDT transfers from wallets linked to HTX have been appearing across user addresses, raising concerns about sanctions screening at exchanges and DeFi platforms. These tiny transactions, generally worth only a few dollars, are causing compliance issues for recipients who may not be aware of the HTX connection.

The UK sanctioned Huobi Global S.A. and associated HTX names in May over alleged financial activity connected to Russia's financial sector. Although an HTX ambassador denied that the exchange intentionally distributed the funds, the source and purpose of the transfers remain unconfirmed.

Exchanges have already tightened screening of HTX-linked deposits and withdrawals after the UK action, resulting in transfer restrictions and account freezes for users tied to HTX exposure. The latest transfers are being described as 'compliance poisoning' by some users, although there is no evidence that HTX directed a campaign to contaminate recipient wallets.

HTX's on-chain structure has been under examination since the May sanctions, with analysts tracking the exchange shifting activity into hundreds of newly identified central wallets. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists documented the rapid wallet expansion in July, arguing that frequent address changes make exchange flows harder for investigators and compliance systems to track.

The pressure on HTX will increase on August 23 when European Union transaction restrictions take effect, with Binance also restricting transactions involving HTX from this date. Binance's public notice does not clarify whether the restriction applies only to its UK and EU users, as claimed by HTX ambassador Justin Sun.
