Huang Warns Against Regulating AI Like Social Media, Citing Market Forces
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has made it clear that he believes governments should not regulate artificial intelligence like social media. Speaking at an AI gathering convened by King Charles III in Scotland, Huang argued that AI is a 'technology' rather than a 'product,' and treating it as such would be a policy mistake with real consequences for innovation.
Huang's stance puts him at odds with some of his own customers, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has called for voluntary coordination among AI development labs to moderate the pace of frontier model advancements. In contrast, Huang believes that market forces, such as reputational damage and liability exposure, already serve as effective guardrails against releasing dangerous AI systems.
The European Union has already passed the AI Act, the world's most comprehensive AI regulatory framework, which could create a fragmented global market where AI companies must maintain separate compliance regimes for different jurisdictions. Huang's vision of minimal regulation in the US could diverge from Europe's tightening grip on AI governance.
