Hughes Calls for Embedded Regulators in AI Labs
Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes is proposing the creation of an 'Office of AI Supervision' to regulate advanced artificial intelligence labs. This office would embed government staff directly inside leading companies, such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind, for three-year rotations. The goal is to prevent regulators from developing cozy relationships with the companies they oversee.
The rotation mechanism aims to keep regulators skeptical, even while operating within the company's walls. Hughes has built on his earlier proposals, which included safety protocols, registration requirements, and third-party validation for AI models with training costs exceeding $100 million.
The Office of AI Supervision proposal is part of a broader conversation about governing frontier AI. While some regulatory frameworks focus on what companies must do, Hughes's approach emphasizes the importance of physical presence rather than process. This raises practical questions, such as which agency would house this office and how regulators would acquire necessary technical expertise.
