Hungarian Investors Diversify Portfolios Amid Rising Inflation
The Hungarian investment landscape has undergone significant changes in recent years due to factors such as high inflation and decreased interest rates. As a result, investors are increasingly looking for alternative options beyond traditional real estate investments.
According to data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), the average price of used homes has increased by nearly four times since 2015, while the average square meter price has risen from 175,000 HUF to 623,000 HUF. However, the entry point for real estate investments continues to rise, with significant down payments, borrowing requirements, and maintenance costs associated with owning a home.
Despite these challenges, real estate remains a popular investment choice in Hungary, with many investors opting for blue-chip stocks such as OTP Bank, Magyar Telekom, MOL, and Richter. The Hungarian Blue Chip Index (BUX) has seen significant growth over the past decade, increasing by 700% since its inception.
The introduction of the Long-term Investment Account (TBSZ) has also made it easier for investors to invest in global ETFs or domestic blue chips, with tax benefits available after five years. As a result, many Hungarian investors are turning to diversified ETF portfolios and TBSZ combinations as a long-term investment strategy.
The article also notes that cryptocurrency is becoming increasingly popular among Hungarian investors, with many incorporating digital assets into their portfolios. While the number of users has decreased in recent years, it is expected to increase again with the introduction of stricter regulations and potential price increases.
