HYPE Token Surges on Revenue-Backed Buyback Mechanism
Hyperliquid's HYPE token reached a new high, trading above $90, and is staying within reach of its September 23 all-time high of about $97.98, according to CoinMarketCap data. The token's surge is attributed to a cash injection of $14.5 million in USDC reserve yield from the AQAv2 mechanism, which was activated on August 26. This mechanism routes 90% of the yield generated by Hyperliquid's $5 billion USDC reserves into the Assistance Fund, which uses it to buy HYPE and burn it permanently.
The AQAv2 mechanism has the potential to add about $182 million a year to Hyperliquid's revenue, according to CoinGecko estimates, with the actual number dependent on reserve balances and rates. Hyperliquid's revenue has already surpassed $429 million through mid-September, making it the top project on the platform's adjusted revenue leaderboard.
Unlike other tokens, which may surge due to speculative narrative or marketing efforts, HYPE's price is directly tied to the protocol's trading activity and revenue. This structure is seen as a positive development, as it provides a clear and transparent mechanism for the token's price to be determined.
However, it's worth noting that buyback programs funded by reserve yield are still exposed to interest rate moves, and a decrease in Federal Reserve rates could impact the token's price.
