Hyperliquid Faces Regulatory Hurdles in US Expansion
Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy has expressed concerns about US regulation's impact on Hyperliquid, a crypto derivatives exchange that is expanding into tokenized real-world assets. According to Gaevoy, regulatory pressure from the United States is the biggest long-term obstacle for the platform.
Hypenliquid has been performing well in its expansion beyond crypto derivatives, but Gaevoy notes that it will eventually have to confront two structural constraints: regulatory pressure and throughput. The latter refers to the platform's ability to compete with incumbent venues like CME and Nasdaq, which operate at microsecond-level matching speeds.
Gaevoy warns that a Know-Your-Customer (KYC) mandate could push Hyperliquid toward becoming increasingly centralized, compromising its permissionless model. He also notes that token classification is another area of uncertainty, as the HYPE token could be seen as facilitating an unregistered exchange or clearing activity.
