IBM Quantum Breakthrough Sparks Fears for Bitcoin's Future

IBM's latest achievement in quantum computing has sparked excitement and concern about its potential impact on various industries, including crypto. The company claims to have reached 'trusted quantum advantage,' with a 70-logical-qubit computer performing calculations beyond classical methods. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna predicts that quantum computing will start generating revenue by 2028-2029 and could create $1 trillion in value by the late 2030s.

However, for Bitcoin (BTC), this breakthrough raises concerns about its vulnerability to quantum threats. Researchers estimate that breaking elliptic curve cryptography would require thousands of logical qubits, but IBM's demonstration shows how quickly progress is being made. Google Quantum AI has already reduced the estimated number of qubits needed to break this encryption by 20 times, from millions to fewer than 500,000.

The Bitcoin Foundation warns that more than 34% of BTC supply is held in addresses with exposed public keys, making them vulnerable to quantum attacks. While technical solutions exist, such as BIP-360 and post-quantum cryptography, the industry lacks a clear migration plan, unlike regulated financial institutions.
