Iceland Rejects EU Membership Talks, Stays Outside MiCA Crypto Framework
Iceland has chosen to maintain its current status as a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) after rejecting a proposal to resume talks seeking EU membership in a referendum held on August 30. The No option garnered support from 52.8% of voters, with 105,339 votes, in a close call that highlighted a deep rural-urban divide.
A Yes vote would have implied a new move by Icelandic authorities to resume EU integration talks, which the nation started in 2009 but froze without an official withdrawal to this day. By rejecting these talks, Iceland retains its status outside the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) framework umbrella, at least for now.
Ella Nummelin, Corporate Administrative Intern at IBCCS TAX CY, pointed out that while cryptocurrency activities in Iceland are governed by general-purpose financial laws rather than a specialized framework, this might change in the future. 'The main development to watch is the eventual incorporation of MiCA into the EEA Agreement,' she stated.
