Igloo Shuts Down Abstract Blockchain After Millions in Losses
Igloo Inc., the company behind the popular Pudgy Penguins NFT collection, has decided to shut down its Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, Abstract. After 18 months of operation, the company admitted that a blockchain built solely for consumer crypto cannot sustain itself financially. Abstract will cease operations on December 15, 2026, and users are advised to withdraw their funds before that date to avoid permanent loss.
The decision comes after Igloo Inc. reportedly lost tens of millions of dollars funding Abstract. Despite initial ambitions to create a hub for consumer apps, games, and NFT projects, the network struggled with thin DeFi activity, weak liquidity, and lack of institutional interest. Abstract managed to deploy 144 apps, onboard 400,000 users, and partner with brands like Red Bull Racing and Disney, but these efforts were not enough to make the model viable.
Igloo CEO Luca Netz explained that the company chose not to launch a token for Abstract and opted to refocus its resources on the core Pudgy Penguins business. The move highlights the challenges of sustaining a niche consumer-focused blockchain, especially when competing against general-purpose rollups like Arbitrum and Base, which attract a broader range of applications.
The shutdown also comes at a difficult time for Pudgy Penguins' Solana token, PENGU, which has lost about 85% of its value from its peak. While Abstract's closure does not reverse this trend, it signals Igloo's commitment to prioritizing its original brand over experimental ventures.
