Igloo shuts down Abstract layer 2 network after millions in losses
Igloo Inc., the company behind the popular NFT project Pudgy Penguins, has decided to shut down Abstract, its consumer-focused Ethereum layer 2 network. The chain will cease operations on December 15, 2026. CEO Luca Netz revealed that the company invested tens of millions of dollars over 18 months but failed to achieve a viable product-market fit.
Despite impressive numbers, including 400,000 users, 4 million Abstract Global Wallets, and over 325 million transactions, Abstract could not sustain itself financially. The ecosystem generated $40 million in revenue and hosted 144 apps, but growth stalled, decentralized finance activity remained low, and operating costs were too high. Liquidity issues further exacerbated the problem, as the lack of deep DeFi markets made it difficult for capital to stay on the chain.
With the shutdown announcement made on October 6, 2026, users now have until December 15, 2026, to migrate their assets. The total value locked (TVL) in Abstract was between $47 million and $48 million at the time of the announcement. Users can move their assets through the Migration Hub or Abstract’s native bridge. Igloo also ruled out launching an Abstract token or running an ICO, emphasizing the need for real demand rather than token-driven activity.
Abstract’s origins trace back to summer 2024 when Igloo acquired Frame. The project raised over $11 million in funding and launched its mainnet in January 2025. The goal was to create a consumer-friendly chain that could attract mainstream audiences with tools like the Abstract Global Wallet and Abstract Portal. The shutdown marks Igloo’s strategic retreat to focus on its core business, Pudgy Penguins, and its PENGU token.
The shutdown highlights the challenges of sustaining a layer 2 network, even with significant user engagement and revenue. The gap between the number of wallets and active users underscores the difficulty of converting interest into sustained activity. For Igloo, the decision to shut down Abstract allows the company to concentrate on its most profitable venture, Pudgy Penguins.
