IIT Madras Empowers Indian Artisans with AI and Blockchain
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has partnered with the Human Welfare Association to establish an Artisan Empowerment Lab. The lab aims to digitize traditional crafts and connect artisans directly with buyers using artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology.
The initiative will create a digital registry of artisans and craft products, verify product origins, and provide transparency in the marketplace for traditional Indian crafts. A central component is the use of QR codes on authentic Geographical Indication-tagged products, which consumers can scan to access information verifying authenticity and identifying the artisan responsible.
The first phase will focus on five GI-recognized craft categories from the Varanasi region: Banaras Brocade and Sarees, Varanasi Soft Stone Jali work, Banaras Gulabi Meenakari, Varanasi Wooden Lacquerware and Toys, and Banaras Metal Repousse Craft.
IIT Madras Director Prof. Veezhinathan Kamakoti emphasized the significance of traditional Indian arts and crafts in preserving cultural heritage and contributing to economic growth.
