Illinois Delays Crypto Tax Amid Industry Pushback
The state of Illinois has agreed to a six-month pause on implementing a new tax on cryptocurrency transactions.
The tax, which imposes a 0.2% duty on crypto when exchanged, transferred, or stored, was set to take effect on January 1. However, after negotiations between industry groups and state officials, the implementation date has been delayed.
The Digital Chamber and Illinois Blockchain Association reached an agreement with state officials, which still needs approval from the judge handling the groups' lawsuit against the state.
Supporters of the tax argue that it will generate approximately $60 million in revenue in 2027, but critics warn that it could lead to digital asset companies and entrepreneurs moving to other states.
