Illinois Delays Crypto Tax Start Date to July 1, 2027

Share

A court-approved delay has pushed back the start date of Illinois' 0.2% Digital Asset Tax from January 1 to July 1, 2027.

The state's new tax was signed into law by Governor JB Pritzker in June as part of its 2027 budget, with lawmakers projecting it would bring in approximately $60 million the following year.

The Digital Chamber and Illinois Blockchain Association filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the tax, arguing that it unfairly targets blockchain-based transactions for different tax treatment than comparable financial activity.
