Illinois Delays Digital Asset Tax Until July 2027 Amid Ongoing Court Challenges

Share

The Illinois state government has agreed to delay the implementation of its 0.2% tax on digital assets until July 1, 2027, following a court challenge by the Digital Chamber.

The original effective date was January 1, 2027, but the delay gives both sides more time to brief and argue the legal challenges over the tax's constitutionality and process.

Digital Chamber CEO Cody Carbone described the agreement as a positive development, but emphasized that the organization will continue fighting the tax in court.

The Digital Chamber is one of several groups challenging the tax, which was included in Illinois' fiscal year 2027 budget legislation signed by Governor JB Pritzker in June. The Blockchain Association and Crypto Council for Innovation have also filed separate lawsuits against the tax.
