IMF Agrees to Unlock $140M in Funding for El Salvador
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reached an agreement with El Salvador to unlock $140 million in funding. This comes after the government showed proof that its Bitcoin purchases were paid for by private donations rather than state funds.
The deal involves a total facility of around $1.4 billion, which began in February 2025. The IMF and El Salvador have reached a staff-level agreement on combining the second and third reviews of the country's 40-month loan program. However, this still requires approval from the IMF Executive Board.
The IMF expects no further accumulation of Bitcoin beyond what has already been documented. According to the National Bitcoin Office tracker, El Salvador holds around 7,764 BTC, worth approximately $628 million at current prices.
