IMF Approves $138M for El Salvador Despite Missing Bitcoin Target
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved an immediate disbursement of $138 million to El Salvador, despite the country missing its target for accumulating Bitcoin. The waiver granted by the IMF allows El Salvador to continue holding its existing Bitcoin holdings, but no further government-led accumulation is expected.
The majority ownership and operational control of the Chivo wallet have been transferred to a private operator, reducing direct state involvement in Bitcoin-related activities. This move is seen as a step towards unwinding government participation in Bitcoin.
El Salvador's economy has been performing well, with an estimated 3.9% growth in 2025 and a projected 4.5% growth in 2026. The IMF credits sustained improvements in security and investor confidence for this performance.
