IMF Clears El Salvador of Public Funding for Post-Review Bitcoin Purchases
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has clarified that El Salvador's post-review Bitcoin purchases were not funded by public resources. According to an IMF statement, the country's authorities attributed the growth in its Bitcoin reserve to private donations after the first review of its financing program concluded in June 2025.
The IMF verified this explanation through documents provided by local authorities and concluded that the additions should not be treated as additional government-funded Bitcoin buying within the terms of the program.
In addition, the lender stated that majority ownership and operational control of the Chivo wallet, El Salvador's state-linked Bitcoin wallet, have been transferred to a private operator, while the government retains a minority stake and custodial responsibilities.
