El Salvador has been cleared by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of using public funds to purchase Bitcoin since June 27, 2025.

The IMF confirmed that all Bitcoin purchased during this period were funded entirely through private donations, with no taxpayer money directed toward crypto accumulation.

Under the terms of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) agreement, El Salvador has access to approximately $1.4 billion in funding, with an additional $140 million pending approval from the IMF's Executive Board.

The government's publicly held Bitcoin totals around 7,764 BTC, valued at roughly $628 million as of early September 2026, reflecting a mix of earlier purchases and substantial unrealized gains accumulated during Bitcoin's rally over the past two years.
