IMF Clears El Salvador on Bitcoin Holdings After Review
El Salvador's Bitcoin holdings have been scrutinized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) following its first review of the country's financing program in June 2025. According to a statement from the IMF, documents provided by Salvadoran authorities revealed that the country's accumulation of Bitcoin after the review came from private donations.
The IMF clarified that no public funds were used to purchase the additional BTC, which was announced by President Nayib Bukele in November 2025. The president had stated that El Salvador would continue to add at least one BTC daily, despite the IMF's agreement with the country in December 2024 limiting public-sector involvement in Bitcoin.
The IMF also confirmed that majority ownership and operational control of the Chivo wallet had been transferred to a private operator, while the government retained a minority stake and custodial responsibilities. The lender stated that no further accumulation beyond documented donations is expected.
