IMF Clears El Salvador on Public BTC Funding, Sees Unprecedented Unrealized Gains
El Salvador's government has clarified its Bitcoin reserve funding sources after an IMF review. The country, which adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, buys around one BTC per day.
According to the IMF, El Salvador did not use public funds for its recent Bitcoin purchases since June 27, 2025. Instead, the government has been accumulating BTC through private donations.
The country's total cost for these holdings is about $388.9 million, while the current market value of its 7,764 BTC reserve is around $628.3 million.
El Salvador holds an unrealized profit of roughly $239.4 million from its Bitcoin reserves, as its average purchase price is $67,290.83 per BTC and Bitcoin's current trading price is around $80,983.
