IMF Confirms El Salvador's Additional Bitcoin Holdings Were Privately Donated
El Salvador's Bitcoin holdings have been under scrutiny after the country announced it had acquired 1,090 BTC in November 2025. According to a Thursday statement from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), documents provided by Salvadoran authorities confirm that these additional Bitcoins were donated privately and did not come from public resources.
The IMF stated that no further accumulation of Bitcoin is expected beyond documented donations. This explanation addresses concerns raised after El Salvador's post-review Bitcoin accumulation in June 2025, which sparked questions about compliance with its $1.4 billion IMF program.
El Salvador had agreed to limit public-sector involvement in Bitcoin under the IMF package in December 2024 and again in March 2025, when new documents barred 'voluntary accumulation' of Bitcoin by the public sector. President Nayib Bukele responded that the purchases were 'not stopping', but the IMF has now confirmed that no new Bitcoin had been purchased since the agreement.
El Salvador's current holdings stand at approximately 7,764 BTC, valued at around $628 million based on current prices of around $80,900 per BTC. The balance remains higher than before the IMF agreement, reflecting additions attributed to private donations.
