IMF Demands Stricter Stablecoin Regulations in Brazil Amid Growing Crypto Market
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on Brazil to implement stricter regulations for stablecoins, citing concerns about their vulnerability to global financial turbulence.
According to the IMF, cross-border cryptocurrency transactions have surpassed traditional capital flows in Brazil, with dollar-pegged stablecoins accounting for a significant portion of these transactions.
The IMF identified several vulnerabilities in Brazil's current regulatory framework, including inadequate consumer protection protocols and reserve requirements.
In response to these concerns, the Brazilian central bank, Banco Central do Brasil, has implemented new regulations governing electronic foreign exchange service providers, excluding virtual assets from settlement processes within monitored cross-border payment systems.
