IMF Reveals Private Donations Fuel El Salvador Bitcoin Holdings
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revealed that El Salvador's bitcoin accumulation is funded by private donations, not public resources. This clarification comes after a staff-level agreement with Salvadoran authorities to release $140 million as part of a 40-month funding deal. The IMF noted that documentation has been provided verifying that the bitcoin accumulation since the first review reflects private donations and no public resources were used.
The government had agreed to end public Bitcoin buys, aligning treasury policy with IMF transparency rules. Additionally, the majority control of Chivo Wallet was privatized, resolving IMF compliance concerns. This move is seen as a positive step towards enhancing transparency of Bitcoin holdings across various wallets.
John Dennehy, founder of My First Bitcoin, speculated that Tether could be behind the donations, given its resources and motivation to do so. However, there has been no public acknowledgement of a donation of this size to El Salvador's bitcoin reserves.
