IMF Warns Brazil's Crypto Market Needs Urgent Oversight Amid Explosive Growth
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sounded the alarm on Brazil's booming cryptocurrency market, urging for urgent oversight to plug compliance holes in an incomplete regulatory framework.
In its Financial System Stability Assessment report, the IMF highlighted that cross-border crypto flows have surpassed traditional capital, with stablecoins being a favorite among companies and retail due to their efficiency and tax-related advantages.
The report found that these flows are largely dependent on international and national investment indexes, as well as investor reactions to fluctuations in assets such as the S&P 500, VIX, and bitcoin prices.
The IMF also noted that while the Central Bank of Brazil has taken action to regulate the virtual asset service provider (VASP) industry, there are still key areas lacking proper protections, including legal safeguards for customers and segregation of assets held in custody.
