India Cracks Down on Crypto-Facilitated Cybercrime, Arrests Alleged Mastermind
Indian authorities have made a significant breakthrough in their fight against cybercrime after arresting a 25-year-old man from Assam, who is believed to be one of the most prolific money handlers ever caught in the country. Rafiqool Alam's fingerprints were found on over 1,000 cybercrime cases across India, with investigators describing him as an embedded operator inside a foreign syndicate.
According to the Gujarat Police Cyber Centre of Excellence, Alam allegedly ran a pipeline that connected small-town Indian mule accounts to a Chinese criminal network. He used multiple bank accounts and cryptocurrencies to launder money, often breaking it down into smaller amounts to avoid detection by authorities.
The investigation began with an elderly man who was being held in a 'live' digital arrest by fraudsters. The police were able to rescue several other victims across the country, including one who had already sent ₹20 lakh and another who was about to send ₹10 lakh.
